  • What is Rooted in Naija?

    Rooted in Naija is a not-for-profit organization that aims to connect young adults of the African diaspora with their ancestral heritage and cultural roots. What are our responsibilities? We coordinate all travel, transfers, housing, security, and logistics for every trip.

  • What's included?

    Round trip airfare (group travel from a designated city), Insurance and security, Accommodation, Group transportation at destination, Meals, All organized activities and touring.

  • What's not included?

    Visas and Personal purchases (like souvenirs). 

  • How is Rooted in Naija funded?

    We are funded by individual donors who believe in our mission. Participants are also expected to contribute towards the trip. Scholarships are available.

  • Do these trips have any impact on the Participants?

    Reasons to go on a Rooted in Naija trip include

  • Am I Eligible?

    1. Young adult
    ⁠2. Of Nigerian or African descent
    3.Completed high school as at time of travel

  • Be a Changemaker

    Is there an age Requirement? You must be at least 18 years old at the time of the trip.

  • I've been to Africa before. Am I Eligible?

    Yes.

  • WHO WILL I TRAVEL WITH?

    Other like-minded young adults.

  • WHAT WILL WE DO ON EACH TRIP?

    All of our trips include must-see sites, lots of great food, fun, and community building experiences with fellow travelers.  

  • WILL THIS BE A RELIGIOUS TRIP?

    No, but we may visit religious places.

  • WHAT SHOULD I PACK?

    A suggested packing list will be given to selected participants.  

  • WHAT IF I GET ILL OR NEED MEDICAL ASSISTANCE WHILE ON A TRIP?

    Your health is our top priority. A fully-trained first-aid responder will be with your group throughout the length of your trip. We will partner with an on-call doctor and local hospital for the trip duration.

  • WHAT AIRPORT WILL MY TRIP LEAVE FROM?

    A large US hub with a direct flight to the destination.

  • WHAT IF I MISS MY GROUP’S FLIGHT DUE TO A DELAYED CONNECTING FLIGHT?

    We’ll do our best to get you rebooked depending on flight availability. 

  • CAN I FLY TO THE DESTINATION ON MY OWN AND THEN MEET MY GROUP THERE?

  • SAFETY AND SECURITY AT ROOTED IN NAIJA

    The safety and well-being of our participants is our foremost concern. We will have comprehensive travel insurance and on-site 24/7 armed security.

  • WILL STAFF MEMBERS ACCOMPANY US THROUGHOUT THE TRIP?

    Yes.

  • MY PARENTS ARE WORRIED ABOUT ME TRAVELING TO AFRICA. WILL THEY BE ABLE TO REACH ME DURING THE TRIP IF THERE’S AN EMERGENCY?

    Yes. Participants will need to bring their own phone with an international calling and data plan.

  • I’M A LITTLE NERVOUS ABOUT TRAVELING TO AFRICA. SHOULD I BRING PEPPER SPRAY, OR SOMETHING ELSE, TO PROTECT MYSELF?

    If that will make you feel more comfortable. The best way to be safe while on your trip is to stay with your group and follow directions at all times. We will have armed security 24/7. 

  • WHAT IF THE NAME I ENTERED WHEN I APPLIED HAS CHANGED OR IS SPELLED WRONG?

  • IF I'M NOT SELECTED FOR A TRIP THIS SEASON, CAN I APPLY AGAIN FOR THE NEXT ROUND OF TRIPS?

    Yes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • WHAT IF I DON’T YET HAVE A PASSPORT?

    If you don’t already have a passport, we recommend that you begin obtaining one as soon as selected. You’ll be required to provide your passport number and a photocopy of your passport before we issue your flight ticket.

  • AM I GUARANTEED A SPOT ON A TRIP?

    No. It depends on how many applicants are interested in each trip. We have only a limited number of slots per trip.

  • I THINK I COMPLETED THE APPLICATION. WHAT NOW?

    Now sit back, relax, and be patient. We will contact you if you are selected. Feel free to send us an email to confirm at contact@rootedinnaija.org.

  • HOW CAN I ENSURE I’M ON A TRIP WITH MY FRIENDS?

    We encourage this! Have them also apply for the same trip and contact us to let us know.

  • WHAT IF THE AIRLINE LOSES MY LUGGAGE?

    If your luggage does not arrive when you do, most airlines will offer compensation when you present receipts, so that you can get some basics. We will also have comprehensive travel insurance that can be used for this. Remember to carry essentials such as medications and a change of clothes in your carryon baggage.

  • WHAT IS THE NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT FOR?

    Due to the limited number of spots on each trip, we need to ensure that all selected participants will show up. When an applicant pays the non-refundable deposit, this lets us know that you’re serious about traveling with Rooted in Naija and covers any fees that we might incur in the event of a late cancellation.

  • WHAT ARE THE PAYMENT METHODS I CAN PAY WITH?

    Payments are handled through secure online payment systems. We will also accept wire transfers, or checks.

  • IS IT SAFE FOR ME TO ENTER MY CREDIT CARD NUMBER AND PAY MY DEPOSIT ONLINE?

    Yes. If you are concerned, please reach out for alternate payment methods.

  • WHAT IS THE NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT?

    $350 for selected participants.

  • WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO GET ACCEPTED?

    After filling the application form, you will be contacted and notified If accepted. Accepted applicants will be asked to pay a non-refundable registration fee.

  • Will there be an Orientation?

    Yes, once participants are selected.

  • What type of Insurance is Provided?

    Comprehensive travel insurance will be provided as part of the package.

  • What Transportation will be provided once I get to the venue?

    All transportation will be provided. We will travel together as a group daily.

  • What are the Accommodations like? Will I share a space? Etc.

    Accommodations will be shared. More details will be provided after participants are selected.

  • Will there be Access to WiFi?

    Yes.

  • What happens if I need to leave the program before it ends?

    There will be no refunds.

  • I have friends or family at the destination; Can I stay with them?

    No.

  • Can I stay at the destination after the program is over?

    With special permission prior to the trip.

  • what will happen if there is a security situation at the destination during my trip?

    In the event of a security situation, we will make immediate modifications to the program as needed, including cutting the trip short and returning home if warranted. We will have a full insurance package for each trip.

  • Where is my data stored?

    We take the security and privacy of your data very seriously. Your data is stored on secure servers, with industry-standard encryption and robust security measures. Additionally, we strictly adhere to data protection regulations to safeguard your information.

  • Who can view my profile?

    Your profile can be viewed only by other staff members of Rooted in Naija.

Cancellation, changes, and refunds

More than 90 days before departure:

Refund of all payments that have NOT been used for trip planning. Additionally, non-refundable deposit is not refundable

60-90 days before departure:

50% refund of payments that have NOT been used for trip planning. Additionally, non-refundable deposit is not refundable.

30-59 days before departure:

25% refund of payments that have NOT been used for trip planning. Additionally, non-refundable deposit is not refundable.

Less than 30 days before departure:

No refunds available.

We reserve the right to cancel trips due to insufficient enrollment (minimum group size required).

We may modify itineraries due to safety concerns, political situations, or force majeure events.

If we cancel a trip, participants will receive a full refund or credit toward future programs.

We are not responsible for non-refundable expenses incurred by participants (flights, visas, etc.).

Participants who fail to appear for departure will forfeit all payments.

No refunds will be provided for unused portions of the program due to early departure.
